“My whole body relaxes”

I am a Royal Marine who was diagnosed with acute Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder some 18 months ago.

Although traditional psychotherapy has helped to order my memories and calm some of my more aggressive symptoms, my body has remained chronically hyper-aroused – stuck in a perpetual fight-or-flight response. This has prevented the holistic mind and body recovery that is necessary for effectively treating PTSD.

This is why learning TRE with Katherine has been so significant for me. Katherine’s approach has greatly complemented my psychiatric therapy, helping to reset my physiology and bring order to my inner chaos. In stark contrast to yoga or mindfulness meditation, where the benefits have been fleeting at best, with the TRE techniques that Katherine has taught me – my whole body relaxes and can now remain calm for days at a time.

As well, the pain in my abdomen, back, shoulders, head, and a mild skin condition, all of which were a consequence of chronic trauma, has eased or disappeared altogether. I can breath more freely, and have – for the first time in many years – realised what it feels like to be relaxed, happy, and at ease with myself.

TRE has also improved my self-awareness – so that when I get particularly anxious I can feel the neurogenic TRE tremors beginning on their own, just below the surface. In the past this was a deeply disconcerting and worrying sensation, but since working with Katherine – I now understand what is going on, and those sensations and feelings have become a source of reassurance and comfort.

Overall, learning TRE with Katherine has greatly assisted my recovery from PTSD, helping me to feel more relaxed, embodied, and in control of myself.
