Flora Bowley's 'Bloom True' e-course

Art: Trusting and letting go

I am 11 days into Flora Bowley’s ‘Bloom True’ painting course and to say I am loving it would be an understatement! (Though ‘painting course’ is a bit misleading to be honest. It’s as much an approach to life as it is an approach to art.)

We’re working on two big canvases at the same time, building up layers and switching back and forth between the two as the paint dries.

Each week has a theme – last week it was INTUITION and this week it’s LETTING GO.

The aim of working in layers is to let go of preconceived ideas and let the paintings emerge naturally. This can be hard at times. It involves a lot of trust and a willingness to play and experiment.

It also involves letting go of the need to know where you’re heading.

That’s a big one for me. It’s what makes the course both liberating and scary at the same time!

Right now I’m on layer 3 of my paintings. Later on I’ll post a photo of the layers in sequence, so you can see how the paintings have evolved. In the meantime, I’ve zoomed in on bits I particularly like – because of the colour or the shapes, or both.

Here are a couple of examples:

  1. These are blooming’ gorgeous, Katherine!!!! Either you’re incredibly talented (which I suspect you are…) or Flora Bowley’s course is genius! Can’t wait to see more. Will probably have to have a Skype conversation with you, to catch up better.

    1. Thanks Julia. I would like to say that I am obviously incredibly talented but to be honest, Flora’s course is genius! it would be great to catch up. And if you decide to do the course at any point, let me know. I don’t think you’d regret it for a second.

  2. Hi Katherine, so interesting to see your progressions, they look amazing. I bought her book off the back of your last blog post and I’m going to have a go at ‘letting go’ of the outcome too. Also, can I confess? I opened her book and burst into tears; bit weird I know!! Looking forward to your next post!! Karen x

    1. Wow Karen, reading this made me so happy! I am so pleased you bought Flora’s book after reading my blog post and I don’t think it’s weird at all that you burst into tears. I did too. I think it’s a sign we’re on the right track and need to keep heading down this path… even though we don’t really know where it’s going. How brilliant is that?! Thank you for sharing this with me, it made me really happy. Please keep me posted :-) x
