To cut a long story short, it has been a bit of a rubbish start to 2012.
As my friend so eloquently put it, same shit, different year.
So recently, in desperation, I went for a walk…and had a little word with the powers that be. Well, it was more of a rant actually:
‘Why does everything go wrong for me? Why is everything so hard? Why can’t I succeed at a career, earn decent money and write children’s books? How come you [God] speak to other people and not me? What’s wrong with me? Surely you could send me a frigging sign to help me out from time to time?…Hello? Hello-oooooo?’
No answer. Typical.
I went home and decided to waste some time reading about J. K. Rowling on Wikipedia.
Within 2 minutes I came across this quote:
Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy to finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena where I truly belonged.
– J. K. Rowling, Harvard commencement address, 2008.
It was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I couldn’t believe it!
Now, I’m not sure I really believe in God. But let’s just say that if I did, I would rather he had spoken to me personally and given me this message. Maybe he was busy and this was the next best thing. Whatever, I’m not going to quibble. It answered all my questions. And ended a 10-year-long rant! It doesn’t get much better than that, does it?
